the ESTENSE PATH

FROM THE MIDDLE AGE TO THE RENAISSANCE
The tour starts from the Estense Castle and through the historic center touches the most representative places in town: Savonarola square, the Ducal Palace, the Cathedral dedicated to the patron saint of the city San Giorgio with its beautiful facade (temporarily closed to the public for restoration). The small city hall square with its impressive staircase of honor, to which we can access throught an ancient door called "the face of the horse". The visit will continue in the heart of the Jewish Ghetto, crossing Via Mazzini, seat of the Synagogue and the ancient Via Delle Volte, once considered one of the most important streets of communication and commerce, but also infamous and populated by bandits and prostitutes at night.
We will then continue with the Addizione Erculea, strongly wanted by Ercole I d'Este and built by the court architect Biagio Rossetti. The town-planning made Ferrara the most modern city in Europe in the 15th century. And finally we will take you discreetly inside a Contrada (city quarter), we will visit their tailoring, where skilled hands make clothes of extraordinary beauty and we will discover how during the year they prepare for the most important event: the Palio di Ferrara. In addition to the horse race on the last Sunday of May, 8 quarters have been organizing  for over fifty years, tournaments of flag-wavers, costume parades and shows with hundreds of participants.
